Hexxagon was released as a PC game in 1993. It is based on a similar game Ataxx (also known as Infection, SlimeWars and Frog Cloning), which was released as an arcade video game in 1990. The difference between two is that Ataxx is played on a squared board while Hexxagon is played on a hexagonal one.
In the game the player tries to make his pieces constitute a majority of the pieces on the board at the end of the game, by converting as many of the opponent's pieces as possible. It is a turn-based strategy game of the board game genre, a mix of reversi and checkers. Features single player mode (against the computer) and the two-player mode.
The game was invented in 1988 and programmed on Atari ST, Commodore 64 and Amiga. It was first called Infection. It featured the same set of rules, but for the 7x7 square grid board. In 1990 Leland Corporation released the arcade version of Infection under the name Ataxx. Later on Ataxx spawned many clones and variations, with custom boards and levels of difficulty. It was featured in an interactive movie puzzle adventure game The 7th Guest. The sequel to The 7th Guest (The 11th Hour) features a version of Ataxx with a hexagonal board, which was later on made to be a standalone game Hexxagon.
Currently Hexxagon is one of the most famous and popular puzzle games. Although it doesn't have an extensive version due to its simple gameplay, it is often seen directly or in variations on various app and flash platforms.
