Jet Set Willy Game History

Jet set Willy was the second game to be released in a series called the “Miner Willy Series.” The First game Manic Miner achieved critical acclaim upon it's release. Jet Set Willy was a massive step forward for the platform game genre. The Miner Willy series of games have proved to be some of the most popular games ever.

The History of Jet Set Willy: Return of the Manic Miner

The game was designed by Matthew Smith, who was considered by many as the games design genius of his era. Published and developed by Software Products, Jet Set Willy was released in 1984, and is a single player game of the platform genre.

The gamer plays the role of Willy, who's objective is to clean up his house after a party. Willy has a mansion, and most of the house remains unexplored. The house is home to some rather peculiar creatures who willy must avoid at all costs, as contact with them will result in losing a life.

To guide Willy around the house is simple, right, left and jump are the only controls there are. Although the controls are simple the game is anything but. Situated throughout the various levels 60 in total are collectables, such as keys, that Willy has to collect before moving on to the next level. Along with Ropes, degradable platforms, wild and unusual animals, it's a real challenge.

Conversions and Sequels

As well as Jet set Willy there are two other games in the Miner Willy Series, these are; Manic Miner (1983)
Jet Set Willy 2 (1985)


The games have been converted onto numerous home systems, including; Amstrad CPC
Commodore 64
BBC Micro
Atari 8 bit

There are also other unofficial conversions for, Nintendo Game Boy, Sony PlayStation and Microsoft Windows.
