Metroid Game History

Metroid was the first in a successful line of game to be released for Nintendo Famicom System. The system itself had a rather unsuccessful start in the console market due hardware problems, and many of them had to be recalled. Not to be deterred by this setback, Nintendo's pursuit for dominance over the market continued.

The dominance was helped by the release of recognisable games like Metroid, that still have a huge fan base today.

The History of Metroid: Samus Aran Bounty Hunter Extraodinaire

Developed and published by Nintendo and released for the Japanese console market in 1986, Metroid was designed by Yoshio Sakamoto and Gunpei Yokoi. The game is a single player experience of the action/adventure/shooter genre.

The gamer plays the role of a bounty hunter named Samus Aran, and must venture through the planet of Zebes and defeat numerous enemies (metroids) along the way. The planet is a maze like fortress, and many sections were initially out of limits to Samus. As the game progressed, the finding of new power ups would allow our heroine to enter the previously inaccessible areas of the world.

Dotted throughout the world were various health and weapon upgrades, that would aid Samus on her quest. As well as power ups, Samus had a rather neat signature move, of morphing into a sphere which allowed her to enter parts of the world that would be inaccessible by any other means.

When reaching the end of the game Samus faced a boss character called Mother Brain. Although defeating the boss wasn't exactly hard, it was what happened after that would surprise and challenge the gamer. Upon the destruction of Mother Brain, the player would then have to escape the fortress of Zebes in 3 minutes. If successfully escaping, the gamer would then be awarded an ending depending on the time spent completing the game.

Conversions and Sequels

The game has been released for most of Nintendo's consoles to date, the last version was released for the Wii virtual console.

Metroid has had three main sequels to date which are;
Metroid 2: The Return of Samus
Super Metroid
Metroid Fusion

There game also has many spin-offs form the true sequels including;
Metroid Prime
Metroid Prime Hunters
Metroid Prime Hunters 2:Echoes
Metroid Prime 3: Corruption
