Space Invaders Game History
To get straight to the point Space Invaders upon its release became one of the most influential video games of all time. In Japan the game became so popular that certain arcades contained only Space Invader gaming cabinets. The game was blamed for the Yen shortage, and on a more serious note also blamed for the increase in youth crime of the era. This was because it was believed to be responsible for teenagers stealing to have money for their daily fix of the Space Invader experience.
The History of Space Invaders
The game was originally released in 1978. Designed by Tomohiro Nishikado, developed by the Taito Corporation and published by Midway, Space Invaders was a single player game classed as a fixed shooter.
The aim of the game is to blast your way through waves of alien attack with the help of a laser cannon. As the game progresses and the more of aliens hoards that were destroyed, the enemy would descend at a quicker rate. The gamer had to destroy all aliens before they reached the very bottom of the screen. Every now and then an alien saucer would move horizontally across the screen, this could be destroyed for extra points.
The only defence the player had from the ever advancing alien army were four buildings or shields. These shields could be slowly destroyed either by the bombs dropped by the aliens or from the laser cannon itself.
It is believed that the game was created after game designer Tomohiro Nishikado became inspired by the Atari classic Breakout. He wanted to design a game that had the same level of achievement upon completion of a level.
